PURPOSE

To document the cultural norms, values and practices that impact on HIV&AIDS, maternal health and GBV in the cultural institution of Obusinga Bwarwenzururu.


OBJECTIVES / QUESTIONS

i. To document negative and positive cultural norms, values, beliefs that impact on HIV&AIDS, maternal health and GBV
ii. To take stock of community acknowledged good practices and lessons learned in responding to HIV&AIDS, improving maternal health and reducing GBV.
iii. To document ongoing programmes using a cultural approach to address HIV/ AIDS, maternal health and GBV and their impact in the communities.
iv. To synthesize community proposed recommendations for positive change.


METHODOLOGY

This was a cross-sectional study that utilised qualitative methods of informants’ selection and data collection. The process involved an extensive desk review, the use of in-depth interviews and group discussions. The desk review entailed profiling of the various cultural norms, values and practices in the Obusinga Bwarwenzururu (OBR) traditional and cultural institution. Primary visits in OBR were undertaken to enable interaction with expert informants and stakeholders.
