The Education Development Center, Inc. (EDC) implemented SSIRI programs aimed at supporting efforts to improve access and quality of education in Southern Sudan. The three (3) inter-related radio-based education programs namely “learning villages”, “RABEA for Beginners” and “RABEA advanced and intermediate” were implemented through interactive radio instruction and broadcast on various radio stations in various States located in Southern Sudan, targeting a wide range of audience. This study undertaken by SEDC was intended to project the proportion of the adult population (15+ years) in Southern Sudan who consistently listen to SSIRI programs, their views and perceptions on the quality of programs in order to improve their effectiveness in supporting the region’s educational programs

PURPOSE

To accurately project the current proportion of the adult population (15+ years) in Southern Sudan who consistently listen to SSIRI programs, their views and perceptions on the quality of programs in order to improve their effectiveness in supporting the region’s educational programs

OBJECTIVES / QUESTIONS

1. Estimate the number of people who consistently listen to all SSIRI programs in Southern Sudan
2. Develop a profile of individuals who listen to the SSIRI programs
3. Assess the level of awareness of the SSIRI programs in Southern Sudan
4. Assess people’s perceptions and views on the SSIRI programs
5. Assess the clarity of the signals of the FM radio stations broadcasting SSIRI programs
6. Provide feedback for improving the effectiveness of SSIRI programs

METHODOLOGY

A cross-sectional survey design was adopted in executing this listenership survey and evaluation of the RABEA programs. A three-stage cluster sampling approach was used to draw the sample. The survey used quantitative methodologies to answer the key issues of the survey (to estimate the number of adults aged 15+ years who consistently listen to all SSIRI programs, their views, and perceptions on SSIRI programs). Through the same approach, a detailed profile of individuals who listen to the programs as well as their suggestions for improving the effectiveness of the SSIRI programs was obtained.
